Avangrid Renewables LLC and Primergy Solar LLC have confirmed a purchase agreement for a 600 MW AC portfolio of solar generation and energy storage projects currently under development in Humboldt County, New York.
Avangrid Renewables initiated this portfolio in 2017 after announcing the expected closure of its 522 MW coal-fired North Valmy power plant. The company says it used its experience in developing renewable projects to create a solar and storage solution that leverages the transmission capacity that will eventually be freed from the North Valmy facility.
"Our vision has always been to develop projects with clean, renewable energy sources to fill the gap created by the shutdown of coal production," said Alejandro de Hoz, President and CEO of Avangrid Renewables. "What makes this project unique is its location in northern Nevada, where there has been no significant solar development activity."
The portfolio includes Hot Pot Solar, a 350 MW AC solar system paired with a 280 MW battery storage component for four hours, and Iron Point Solar, a 250 MW solar system with a 200 MW battery storage component for four hours.
Under the terms of the agreement, Avangrid Renewables will provide development services to the projects, while Primergy will oversee the design, procurement, financing, construction and commissioning of the projects.
Hot Pot Solar and Iron Point Solar, expected to be operational in 2023 and 2024, were included in the integrated resource plan that NV Energy recently filed with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission.
